Oakton Celebrates Earth Month with Events Focused on Nature and Sustainability

Connect with nature at one of the Oakton College campuses.

Des Plaines, Ill. (March 26, 2025) – Oakton College celebrates Earth Month with free events throughout April. Join students, faculty, staff and other community members to connect with nature, explore conservation efforts and appreciate our planet!

"Oakton’s Earth Month events offer immersive outdoor experiences, educational talks and live performances designed to inspire awareness and action toward a sustainable future,” said Delaney Malloy, sustainability specialist. “The events highlight the College’s dedication to sustainability, environmental education and strengthening our connection to the natural world."

The events will take place at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road, and the Ray Hartstein Campus in Skokie, 7701 North Lincoln Avenue.

Nature Bathing
April 1, 2-3 p.m., Des Plaines campus main lobby
Experience the restorative power of nature with Jessica Rodriguez, a certified forest bathing guide from Chicago. The guided session will introduce participants to Shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of "forest bathing.” Through intentional breathing, slow walking and sensory engagement, attendees will gain stress relief, enhanced focus, and a renewed appreciation for the environment.


Tree Walk with Lynn Zaransky
April 10, 12:30-1:30 p.m., Ray Hartstein campus main lobby
Discover the beauty and significance of Oakton’s trees during a walk with environmental educator Lynn Zaransky. As a passionate advocate for native trees and sustainable landscapes, Zaransky will share insights about different tree species, their ecological roles, and how they contribute to a healthier planet. Whether you're a nature lover or just curious about the green spaces around campus, the interactive experience will deepen your appreciation for the trees.

Reintroduction of Native Americans into Illinois History
April 15, 12:30 p.m., Des Plaines campus Student Center
Chief White Winnebago will present the historical and cultural contributions of Native American communities in Illinois. The discussion will explore the rich heritage, resilience and enduring presence of Indigenous peoples, as well as the importance of recognizing their historical significance in shaping the region. Attendees will gain a better understanding of Native American traditions, challenges, and ongoing efforts to honor their legacy.

Folktons Concert
April 30, 4 p.m., Des Plaines campus courtyard
Close out Earth Month with an uplifting musical experience at the Folktons Concert! Enjoy an afternoon of live folk music in the beautiful Des Plaines campus courtyard, where melodies and storytelling come together to celebrate nature, culture and community. Soak in the fresh air and enjoy the tunes!
