Oakton Celebrates Latinx Heritage Month with Engaging Events

Mercado de Cultura Latine will feature Latin dance performances.

Celebrate Latinx Heritage Month also known as Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15) at Oakton


Des Plaines, Ill (Sept. 5, 2024) – In honor of Latinx Heritage Month, Oakton College proudly announces a pair of events celebrating the rich culture, history and contributions of the Latino/a/x communities. The events will bring students, families and the community to connect, learn and celebrate.

“Oakton College is proud to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month with events that honor the vibrant culture, history, and contributions of the Latinx community,” said Gabriel Chacon Jr., equity coordinator for the Oakton’s Association to Nurture and Develop the Advancement of Latino/a/x Students in Education (¡ANDALE!) at Oakton. “These events provide meaningful opportunities for students, families, and the community to connect, learn and celebrate together. We invite everyone to join us in these celebrations.”

The Latinx Experience: Nuestra Educación - Navigating the Transfer Process
Sept. 24, 6 - 7 p.m., Room 1530 at Des Plaines campus
Are you or a family member considering attending Oakton and then transferring to another college? Feeling overwhelmed by the process? Join the Career and Transfer Center and ¡ANDALE! for an informative session on navigating the transfer process. This event will provide insights into available resources, tips on completing paperwork, and guidance on including your family in your educational journey. Sessions will be conducted in English and Spanish, making them accessible for students, parents and guardians.

Second Annual Mercado de Cultura Latine
Oct. 10, 5 - 9 p.m., TenHoeve Center (1600 Rooms) at Des Plaines campus
Join the Oakton community for the second annual Mercado de Cultura Latine, a vibrant celebration of Latino/a/x culture featuring over 20 Latin-owned vendors, delicious food and captivating performances. Enjoy live Latin dance performances by the Oakton Dance Club and dance to the rhythms of classic and contemporary Latin pop, spun by DJ Manuel Contreras. This family-friendly event is open to everyone, offering a unique opportunity to explore and support local small businesses, artists and creatives. Mercado de Cultura Latine vendors include Tacos Celeste, Earthling Pottery, Chingona Candle Vibes, Hm Creations Crystal, Yummy Gelatinas and Betsy Customs. Don’t miss this festive evening that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Latino/a/x community!
