General Eligibility

To receive "need-based" financial assistance, a student must:
  • Demonstrate financial need through the federal application process.
  • Have earned a high school diploma, State of Illinois High School Diploma, or a General Education Development (GED) certificate. To find your GED transcript go to the American Council on Education Website.
  • Be enrolled in an associate’s degree program or a certificate program of 16 credit hours or more.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Have a valid Social Security number.
  • Comply with the Academic Progress Requirements for Financial Aid Recipients.
  • Enroll in six or more credit hours of 100-level or higher coursework for maximum consideration.

Ineligible Majors

The Oakton majors in our credit program (listed below), do not meet the U.S. Department of Education financial aid eligibility guidelines. Academic programs must be more than 16 credit hours or taught by Oakton faculty at least 50 percent of the time to qualify for aid. This is important information when completing your application for admission to Oakton.

Noncredit classes and noncredit programs are also ineligible.

If you are a veteran and you are planning to apply for veterans’ benefits, please contact one of our VA Certifying Officers for additional information. You may still be eligible to receive federal veterans benefits and other military service-related educational benefits at Oakton even if you are enrolled in a course of study ineligible for other financial assistance

If you are not eligible for financial aid based on your Oakton major, there are a few options available. A student may choose to change a major (course of study), by the withdrawal date of the semester, through Oakton’s Enrollment Center or participate in the E-Z Pay Tuition Payment Plan. Questions regarding the payment plan are best answered in Oakton’s Cashier Office.

Note: This list is subject to change as institutional guidelines, academic programs and financial aid policies change. Please refer any questions to Oakton's Enrollment Center.
